Maureen O’Boyle, a veteran TV anchor who works at WBTV in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, is asking for your help with a deeply personal matter.
If her name sounds familiar, you’re probably recalling this show:
Yes, that Maureen O’Boyle.
She hosted the FOX tabloid show A Current Affair for five years in the 1990’s.
Like most TV stars who reach the big time, O’Boyle’s career had its share of smaller market stops, including this one at KREM-TV in Spokane, WA, where, in a 1986 promo, she describes her news philosophy:
When she says “news isn’t something I just report, it’s something I’m a part of,” it’s not just a clever cliche. Because a few months earlier, while she was still at WMAZ in Macon, GA, something horrible happened to her.

O’Boyle was terrorized and raped at knifepoint in her own home.
The rapist, James Starling, was caught, tried, convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison. He became eligible for parole in 1993 and has been denied 10 times. Next month, according to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, he gets another shot.
Boyle is taking no chances. She’s launched a petition drive to keep Starling locked up, and announced it on Facebook:
As of today, that petition was well on its way to 50,000 signatures. My guess is Starling isn’t going anywhere.
Maureen O’Boyle is a compassionate person who uses her fame to help others. According to Wikipedia O’Boyle works with numerous charities, including the American Red Cross, Assistance League of Charlotte, American Heart Association, Dress for Success, and Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.
She is also a tough, courageous individual who is now leveraging that same fame to protect her family. Others not in the public eye may not have the same tools available to them. But they can take inspiration from O’Boyle, nonetheless. In her own words, from the petition:
“My daughter, your daughters and granddaughters deserve to wake up every day knowing justice is being served because James Starling is serving his full sentence. Protect women. Don’t let this rapist and monster free. I beg you. Most sincerely, Maureen O’Boyle.”
